Linguistic Background and Classification
Hindi is a member of the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. It is considered a Sanskritised Hindustani language register, primarily based on the Khariboli dialect of Delhi and neighbouring areas.
Geographical Distribution and Official Status
Hindi is the official language of India, alongside English, and serves as the lingua franca of North India. It is an official language in nine states (Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh) and three union territories. Additionally, it has official status in three other states. The language is widely spoken in the Hindi Belt, which includes Western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Number of Speakers
Hindi has a significant number of speakers, with approximately 345 million native speakers and 264 million second-language speakers as of 2020. When combined with Urdu, another Hindustani register, the total number of speakers increases substantially.
Writing System
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, an abugida consisting of 11 vowels and 33 consonants. This script is written from left to right. Unlike Sanskrit, Devanagari is not entirely phonetic for Hindi, particularly when marking schwa deletion in spoken Standard Hindi. The government of India uses the Hunterian transliteration system to write Hindi in Latin.
Mutual Intelligibility with Urdu
Hindi and Urdu are linguistically two registers of the same language and are mutually intelligible. They share a core vocabulary of native Prakrit and Sanskrit-derived words but differ in script and loanwords. Hindi uses the Devanagari script and includes more direct Sanskrit-derived words, while Urdu uses the Perso-Arabic script and incorporates more Arabic and Persian loanwords.
Cultural and Media Influence
Hindi is widely understood in Pakistan due to its mutual intelligibility with Urdu and the popularity of Indian media, particularly Bollywood films and songs. In Afghanistan, especially in Kabul, a significant population can also speak and understand Hindi-Urdu due to the influence of Bollywood.
